I want everything balanced, but leave my broken class/build/powers alone!!!

I always make these sort of tongue in cheek titles for my blogs as anyone who has actually ever read my old ones, and todays will be no different. Actually, this is a very old quibble. It's older than even before the MMO genre got into full swing, and hell older still than online gaming. But it's still gut wrenching hilarious what some people will declare overpowered but the moment their build or powers get touched they are immediately up in arms because they feel and believe that they weren't even remotely close to overpowered.

This sort of falls into the same bracket as the NIMBY thing (or Not in My Back Yard) that George Carlin (RIP) would talk about in a couple of his comedy routines. Players all over the gaming world will sit there and kick and scream and yell and say something is overpowered (primarily because their god build can't hurt another build) and tell the devs to go fix it and prevent it from happening again, but it's always funny when balance swings their way, because then it's a NERF! and the devs are immediately told that balancing and fixing broken power/ability/class X was uncalled for, even though it was blatantly not balanced.

These people will then try to come up with compromises and tell everyone in the world why the NERF! to their power was blatantly mishandled or that it was uncalled for. And finally, in their acts of desperation they will just tell everyone that the devs should just buff all the other powers up to that power instead of nerfing their one power, as if the cycle would not just keep going in a nice, big ole circle jerk, because if they did buff other powers, then the person crying abou their power being NERF!ed will want it buffed then and thus the circle would keep going and going and going.

What's really sad is the people making the cries of foul when it concerns these balance passes is because people became so heavily dependant and reliant on that one power, ability or skill, that they forgot how to play. Seriously, it's become such a travesty in games these days that the motto learn2play now goes well passed insult, it's now scarily prophetic. Take away the toys that make people either one hit wonders or unstoppable god machines and they are so incapable of palying anymore they think the game is broken.

Then there is the other extreme, the people that will want to win any way possible. They make believe they have skill or talent, despite the fact they obviously use broken abilities powers and such and go out of their way to flaunt it. I know at one point after a very long duel that went on before I finally ring'd out a cheap asshat, the busy body kept calling me cheap, for having regen, and using shotgun, yet was using shotgun, concussor beam, and had invuln (back when these powers were expcetionalyl broken). He was incredibly pissed off, filling up zone with all manner of insults and everyone was laughing at him pointing out how skilless he was. It was rather fun little encounter.

Needless to say, Yahtzee actually said it best not long ago, and players just don't care to admit it (Oh hell, words of wisdom from Yahtzee, the world is going to Hell!);

Quote:
Developers usually know their game's flaws better than anyone. Deadlines and publisher meddling are why they don't get fixed.
But in the end, it won't matter how much crying for balance goes out there. People are still going to get possessive of their specific build and abilities, no matter how broken they obviously are.
