Rigid structure in a freeform choice system

Posted 02-18-2010 at 10:54 PM by Silverspar

You know, it's one thing to have a plan, it's completely another to stick so rigidly too that plan you don't bother trying to expand or grow beyond the original template you set for yourself. This has always confounded me in the spectrum of gaming, and in Champions Online it really bewilders me the number of people unwilling to even consider going outside a basic set of abilities for their character(s).

This is taken to many extremes I've noted. Some people are so unwilling to accept to take powers form anywhere that they feel some powers should be in every set equally. Now the question there is, if you can go over to X and pick up the power, why do you need it in Y? Do you think just because the power is placed inside your powerset the rules will magically change and make it fit for you? The answer is no, and making copy paste jobs of existing powers is just dumb, especially in a system that let's you take a power anywhere and further grows said system by letting you tailor the power to your particular likes and dislikes.

Yes, somethings are quite limited, that much I agree. That's a limitation of basic mechanics, and it will be difficult to overcome, but I am also sure those types of changes are coming. But that still doesn't negate the fact that limiting to yourself to a specific set of powers is stupid. Many people like to site all manner of hero types in comics, yet every one of their examples does not limit themselves to one powerset. Superman is super strong, but he is comprised of at least 5 different powersets using Champions set up. Batman, he's comprised of at least three different powersets himself. Aquaman, Wolverine, Cyclops, all of the super hero comics are not limited, in any fashion, to just one powerset or set of powers, but have several powers that help to define and make their characters unique.

One of the great debates is people going melee versus ranged. My question is, why are you sticking to just one form. I bet you can't even find a single super hero out there that sticks to just one form. And even then you have methods to either bring the enemies to you or go to them. Use them, stop limiting yourself on purpose. People going out and purposely sabotaging themselves then try to blame someone else for doing it to themselves. That is just retarded.

It's just so interesting that people want a powerset to have everything when they can go out and get everything they would realistically want. There is no limitation on that. You are in full charge of how you create your character. It's interesting people want to take steps forward, but in the process they leapfrog backwards. Some have even tried to say Champions needs to be a classed based system. As if this will change and make things the way they want.

Maybe one day people will start realizing anything can be made to fit any structure of a character if you stop limitting yourself so much.

I agree completely. No need to be "full-ranged" or "full-melee". That's why my "gimp" build dominates so many people when I'm in PvP. I'm not limited in my attacks *or* passives. If I want to go all out, then I change my build for offence. Same can be said if I want to make someone think twice that I'm an easy target. (Which changes, at the moment, only two powers - Passive ability and Aspect) I also love how people seem to think that "melee speedsters" are useless against flying people...as I demonstrate my high melee capabilities in, again, PvP. Fliers learn real quick that I not only have one, but three abilities that I can use against them at a range. Mighty Leap, Iron Lariat and Venomous Breath. :3 Versatile characters ftw!
